“The Man Under The Bed” is an author of eclectic works, and this one really stands out as a distinctive take on the rave scene in the North East of England in the Second Summer of Love in 1989.
I never ventured up that way at the time, so it’s really fascinating to see the parallels with my own scene in Liverpool, Wigan & Blackburn.
To quote the Man Under The Bed himself: “NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, July 1989, and an illegal rave has just taken place in an old disused whisky warehouse in Byker. The hypnotic sounds of acid house and techno are sweeping throughout the North-East nightclubs and events are starting to spring up everywhere. TURN UP THE BASS is the story of how electronic music and ecstasy culture arrived and exploded in the region. It’s a history of a decade in dance.”
No spoilers, so check it out for yourself. I’ve only ever seen this on Amazon so if you use the link below you are not only supporting the author but also this site with a tiny kickback.
